The race was the opening round of the 1988 Asia-Pacific Touring Car Championship and was the 29th running of the Bathurst 1000.

The win was taken by Longhurst/Mezera in a Ford Sierra RS500 sponsored by Benson & Hedges.

The 1988 edition was the only race in the history of the Bathurst 1000 to have commenced with a rolling start.

Alan Grice and Win Percy came in 15th place in the Holden VL Commodore sponsored by ICL Racing after breaking down in the 139th lap.
