It featured a race-designed 429 cu in (7.0 L) semi-hemispherical head version of the big block 429 V8, offered in the car both to homologate the engine for NASCAR racing and to offer a bigger, more-powerful version of the popular small block Boss 302 Mustang.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1969 NASCAR rules required Ford to produce a minimum of 500 engines for use by the general public to permit Ford to use them in NASCAR racing. So Ford decide to mount them in Mustangs. The 429cu in semi-hemi motor didn't fit in the Ford Mustang (too tall) so the cars were shipped off to Kar Kraft (Dearborn, Michigan) to modify and make the engines fit. Ford produced 859 of these Ford Mustangs with the designation Boss 429. Ford then proceeded to put the engines in Torinos and Mercurys for NASCAR racing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFord used it in NASCAR until 1974 in other Ford and Mercury body platforms, including the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II and Torino Talladega.
